Zip Screen: Taut Protection from Wind, Sun and Insects
With fabric edges locked into guide rails by a zip mechanism, zip screens stay taut without flapping in the wind — protecting your terrace, pergola or balcony in every season.
What is a Zip Screen?
A zip screen is a vertical roller-blind-style shading system in which the fabric's side edges are fitted with a zipper-like bead that locks into aluminium guide rails. This keeps the fabric under tension at all times, so it doesn't billow or flap even in strong wind.
Zip screens are commonly used to close the open sides of a pergola or terrace, combining sun and wind protection with, in mesh fabrics, an unobstructed view to the outside.

The mechanism
A tube motor rotates the roller tube at the top of the frame, raising or lowering the fabric. The fabric's reinforced side edges slide inside aluminium guide rails, which is what keeps it taut under wind loads that would otherwise cause a standard screen to billow. Fabric options range from fine mesh (view-through, reduced glare) to full blackout.
Zip Screen configurations
Manual Zip Screen
Crank-operated, the most economical zip screen configuration.
Motorized Zip Screen
Remote or wall-switch controlled, often paired with a wind sensor.
Motorized Blackout Zip Screen
Full blackout fabric for maximum privacy and light control.
Transparent (Crystal) Zip Screen
A clear PVC panel that blocks wind while preserving the view, popular for winter terrace closures.

Frequently asked questions
How windy can it get before a zip screen fails?
Quality zip screen systems are rated up to roughly 120 km/h thanks to the guide-rail tensioning system, far outperforming an unguided roller screen.
Can I see through a closed zip screen?
Yes — mesh fabrics let you see outside while blocking direct sun and wind; blackout fabrics are also available where full privacy is preferred.
Is a zip screen suitable for a pergola's open sides?
Yes, this is one of the most common uses — combining a bioclimatic or awning roof with zip screens on the sides for full enclosure.
How is a zip screen different from a sliding glass panel?
A zip screen is a soft, retractable fabric system, more economical and easier to install than rigid sliding glass, but it does not provide the same acoustic or thermal insulation.
