Overview

What is a Guillotine Glass Balcony?

A guillotine glass balcony system closes a balcony or terrace with panels that move vertically — up and down — rather than sliding sideways, typically driven by a tube motor and remote control. The name comes from the straight vertical travel of the panels.

In the closed position, the panels stack to seal the opening completely. In the open position, they drop to railing height, instantly turning the balcony into an open terrace with nothing obstructing the view — no stacked panels in a corner, no visible central post.

Guillotine Glass Balcony in motion

How It Works

The mechanism

A tube motor in the top frame drives geared belts inside the side posts, which carry the moving panels vertically along parallel rails. The bottom panel is usually fixed and acts as the railing; the upper panels move. Brush seals and EPDM gaskets between panels and at the frame joints provide weather sealing, and insulated-glass versions trap an air or gas gap between two panes to cut heat loss.

Models

Guillotine Glass Balcony configurations

01

Single Glazing

The most common and economical configuration, using 8–10 mm tempered glass; blocks wind, rain and dust.

02

Insulated (Double) Glazing

Significantly improves thermal and acoustic insulation — the right choice if you plan to heat the space in winter.

03

Wipeable Guillotine Glass

Panels can be tilted inward for safe exterior cleaning, especially valuable on upper floors.

04

Motorized / Smart Control

Remote, wall-switch or smart-home control, optionally integrated with wind and rain sensors.

05

Commercial Wide-Span

Reinforced profiles and higher-torque motors for cafés, restaurants and hotel terraces with heavy daily use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does a guillotine glass system work?

Panels move vertically on a motorized belt system housed in the side posts. Pressing the remote raises or lowers the panels to open or close the balcony.

Is a permit required?

Balcony enclosures are subject to local zoning rules and building management regulations. We recommend checking with your building management and, where applicable, your municipality before installation.

What happens if the motor fails?

Quality systems include a manual override for power outages or motor faults, and the motor itself can be replaced without dismantling the whole system.

Single or insulated glazing — which should I choose?

If you only need protection from wind, rain and dust, single glazing is sufficient. If you plan to heat the balcony in winter or want to reduce noise, insulated glazing is the better investment.

Is it safe if the glass breaks?

Guillotine systems use tempered glass, which is far more impact-resistant than ordinary glass and breaks into small, blunt granules rather than sharp shards.
